This is not a history book, nor does it seek to produce any kind of historiography or a general history of Theatre in Portugal. It is a testimony. Not a broad portrayal, but a personal version—my own—shaped by experiences, memories, obsessions, readings, abilities and knowledge. An Other Theatre – Stories of Experimental Theatre in Portugal is a book that aims to serve as a tool to better understand a specific procedural mode: the Experimental within the performative genre of Theatre. All this within a clear geographical boundary: Portugal—the country to which I returned at around the age of eighteen (already a licensed driver since the age of sixteen). Inevitably, there will be gaps, mistakes, as well as speculations and digressions. Failure, therefore, is promised.
André e. Teodósio
Um Outro Teatro – Histórias do Teatro Experimental em Portugal is a singular proposal by André e. Teodósio that rejects the rigidity of traditional historiography in order to construct a subjective, fragmented and performative narrative about experimental theatre in Portugal. Between memories, documents and digressions, André e. Teodósio maps out a path that is at once personal and collective, marked by practices of risk, reinvention and artistic resistance. The launch of Um Outro Teatro – Histórias do Teatro Experimental em Portugal featured Ana Bigotte Vieira, Raquel Henriques da Silva and Pedro Marques Lopes. Ana Bigotte Vieira, curator and researcher, is responsible for inviting the author to write this book. Raquel Henriques da Silva, a highly respected art historian, has been a constant reference for the author and a critical and inspiring presence in Portuguese art historiography. Pedro Marques Lopes, manager, writer and commentator, was one of the first to publicly praise the lecture that gave rise to the book and is André e. Teodósio’s main “theatre interlocutor”.
