Feminism did not enter academia, and in particular philosophy departments, simply to become another field of study, let alone a mere appendix to already established areas. Feminism entered academia, to a large extent, in order to challenge it from an eminently practical perspective — that is, one rooted in the social world. It did not do so, of course, as some suggest, naively or on a whim. It did so because it identified a close link between the exclusion of women and other marginalised groups from academic spaces and certain theoretical assumptions upheld within them. In this context, it adopted an attitude of subversion towards institutional theoretical production.
